Your Checklist

□ Schedule and attend your Welcome Call appointment with your Student Support Coach

□ Activate your NetID

□ Update your MyNevada account and check your to-do’s

□ Complete the Financial Aid process (if applicable)

□ Activate your @nevada.unr.edu email and verify it is your primary email in MyNevada

□ Sign into Webcampus (Canvas)

□ Review your Student Resource Center (SRC) and complete all assignments and engagement activities in the New Student Orientation before classes begin.

□ Confirm class registration and review the cohort program of study for the structure of the eight-semester course sequence. Direct any registration questions to your Program Manager, Olga Martinez

□ Use the Account Summary tab in MyNevada to review your semester bill and pay tuition.

□ Order your course material before courses start (located in the Announcement section of your

□ Student Resource Center 4-6 weeks prior to semester start).

□ Download Microsoft Office 365 (if you need it)

□ Preview Courses as soon as they are available (5:00 PM PST the Friday before courses start)

□ Complete the Attendance and Syllabus Agreement assignment in the Assignments section of each of your courses by Day 3 (Wednesday) of the first week of class

Your New Student Orientation will be an online module and you will be registered for your courses automatically.

Congratulations on your acceptance and welcome to the School of Social Work at the University of Nevada, Reno! I am so looking forward to having you join us! Our MSW program is uniquely positioned to help you to be the catalyst for the transformation of the next generation of professional social workers. Here you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those individuals that are disenfranchised and engage in service to the community, the profession and society through evidence-informed practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and leadership. The social work profession is aligned with social justice principles, and thus through your field training and classroom education, you will be prepared to serve diverse populations at every level of practice, from the micro, mezzo, to the macro (e.g., individuals, families, groups, communities, organizations, government and beyond). The School of Social Work at UNR is a vehicle for you to become a future champion in ameliorating social problems as described by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (https://grandchallengesforsocialwork.org/). Your decision to become a social worker entails great responsibility, this is accompanied by great personal rewards as a helping professional, no matter which community you would like to make a positive impact upon. Welcome to the School of Social Work at the University of Nevada, Reno! Congratulations on taking this big step toward achieving your goals. Though the academic journey ahead is rigorous and requires great effort, the reward is an educational experience that will provide you with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and field experience that are imperative to becoming a competent social work leader who is prepared to work with diverse client groups across system levels. Your pursuit of this degree is truly noble and inspiring.

Throughout this process, I encourage you to take time to savor this experience and appreciate each of the great things you will accomplish. As you lean into being of service to others, consider scheduling regular time for self-care and activities which renew and inspire you. Also, remember you are not on this journey alone. Welcome to the Master of Social Work Program! We are proud of our Advanced Generalist Master’s program and happy you have chosen to pursue your education at the University of Nevada, Reno. With the many challenges facing our society and the populations we serve, social workers are needed now more than ever.

As the MSW Program Advisor, I would like to welcome you to UNR and to our online MSW program. The course work of our highly structured, CSWE accredited program with sequenced courses will prepare you to be competent Advanced Generalist social workers. Your mission is noble- to make this world a better place.
