Kal Joshi Direct or Master of Science in Business Analytics


Kal Joshi has been in the academia field for over 20 years. In addition to his many years of professional work experience, much of his time has included graduate and undergraduate online education and professional programs. Over the years, he has designed, developed and taught many online courses at different levels, including Capstone series courses and in conjunction with Graduate School processes and procedures. Kal Joshi’s personal belief is that having a keen understanding of student’s needs and program-based expectations is a big factor to his success. In previous positions, Kal has chaired a College of Business Master’s Program Policy Committee for a nationally ranked online graduate business program.

Kal has had many interactions with thousands of online students over the years and has great admiration for his student’s work ethic, commitment, time management skills and work-life balance. In a recent interview, Kal speaks on how Analytics has become a ubiquitous and grounded field across industries both public and private and delivers its importance in today’s world.

What are you currently most passionate about in terms of your work or research?

Launching the MSBA program at the University of Nevada, Reno after relocating from a 20 plus year career has been a great experience so far. Moving here from the great state of Washington and to an “Analytics” grounded environment in Northern Nevada has been an amazing transition. We are in such an important field to business ecosystems with our geographical proximity here in Nevada. MSBA is a robust data driven market trending field with many opportunities for students. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning are reshaping the business landscape for numerous industries. There is an increasingly high demand to bring data to life. By going beyond raw numbers and linking our work to strategic business initiatives. In several ways, the future belongs to those who learn-apply-adapt concurrently with their work and their career.

What excites you most about teaching in an online setting?

I am truly excited about the online professional programs space to watch students in the online space balance work-life responsibilities and expectations in order to succeed in such a rigorous online program of study. I have been in the trenches with my students and I firmly believe that it is my keen understanding of my student’s needs and my guidance on these program-based expectations to be a key factor of my success. The biggest success I get to witness with students in the online space is how they are continually elated and excited to reach their goals with career ready and market driven skills sets.

What are some emerging innovations or industry trends that are changing the way you approach teaching and your research?

I am always excited for the confluence of technology and educational delivery. We are living in a digital age where the future of data and analytics is so important. By developing data and insights, we can assist with strategic and value-based future planning and help make decision-making imperative. Analytics – AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Big Data are just some of the many new technologies we are exploring within the MSBA program. We are constantly looking at how humans and machines are working and interacting alongside each another and looking at how analytics has grounded across industries both public and private. We see data as an asset and by striving to obtain a deeper understanding of it, we can anchor a rigorous analysis and embrace a data driven mindset.
